12. Juni Heute war mein Geburtstag. Ich habe viele Geschenke bekommen. Ich glaube, die
wollen alle, dass ich ausziehe.

12 June Today was my birthday. I got a lot of presents. I think they all want me to move out.

Ich bin doch aber erst 18 Jahre geworden! Die glauben wohl,
dass ich ausziehen will, sobald ich meine Lehre beendet habe.

But I’ve only just turned 18! They probably think that I want to move out
as soon as I’ve finished my apprenticeship.

Will ich aber gar nicht! Oder
vielleicht doch? Naja! Alleine wohnen?

But I don’t want to at all! Or perhaps I do? Oh, well! Live alone?

Nach Hause kommen, wann ich will, essen, was ich
will. Dann brauche ich auch nicht mehr das Gelabere von meinen Eltern hören.

Come home when I want, bring along whom I want,
eat what I want. Then I don’t need to listen to my parents’ jabbering any more, either.

23. Juni Heute habe ich in der Firma Abschied gefeiert; war eigentlich ganz toll. Ich habe
schon eine Menge Bewerbungen geschrieben, aber noch keine Zusage erhalten.

23 June Today I had a farewell party at work. It was brilliant, actually. I’ve sent off a load of
applications, but still no job offer.

Das ist so
furchtbar, wenn man eine Absage bekommt. Alle stehen um mich herum und erwarten, dass
es geklappt hat.

It’s so awful when you get a rejection. Everyone stands
around me expecting there to be a job offer.

Wenn wieder nichts passiert ist und ich eine Absage erhalten habe,
bemitleiden sie mich. „Mach dir mal nichts draus! Der nächste Brief ist bestimmt eine
Zusage.“

And then when there isn’t one, they feel sorry for
me. “Don’t worry about it! The next letter’s bound to be an offer.”

Oder: „Es wird schon werden, du hast ja auch noch deine Eltern, die helfen dir ja
noch.“

Or, “Something’ll turn up.
After all, you’ve still got your parents. They’ll still help you.”

Ich habe heute ein Gespräch zwischen Mutti und Vati belauscht. Sie wollen mein Zimmer zu
einem Esszimmer umbauen und stellen schon genaue Pläne auf, welche Tapeten und Möbel
sie dafür brauchen.

Today I eavesdropped on a conversation between Mom and Dad. They want to convert my room
into a dining room and are already making exact plans as to which wallpaper and furniture they
will need.

Sie rechnen damit, dass ich schon bald ausziehen will. Die wollen
bestimmt nur allein sein. Dabei kann ich doch noch gar nicht ausziehen.

They are counting on my moving out soon.
I’m sure they just want to be alone. But I can’t move out (just) yet.

15. September Heute habe ich wieder Bewerbungen rausgeschickt. Ich habe geschrieben,
wie gerne ich meinen erlernten Beruf ausüben möchte.

15 September Today I sent off/out more applications. I wrote about how much I’d like to
practice the profession I’ve learned.

Ist ja auch wahr! Jetzt habe ich drei
Jahre gelernt, um einen Beruf ausüben zu können., in dem ich anderen Menschen helfen kann.
Viele Menschen brauchen Hilfe, aber ich kann sie nicht geben.

And it’s true, too! I’ve studied for three years now to
practice a profession in which I can help other people. Many people need help, but I can’t give it.

20. September Heute war ich beim Arbeitsamt. Die wollen mit mir einen Eignungstest
machen, welcher Beruf mir liegt und so.

20 September Today I was at the Job Centre/Employment Office. They want to give me an
aptitude test to see what job suits me best and so on.

Denen habe ich erst einmal erzählt, dass ich gelernt
habe und mir dieser Beruf Spaß macht. Die spinnen wohl! Wozu habe ich denn drei Jahre
gelernt?

First I told them that I’d done an
apprenticeship and that I enjoy this profession. They’re nuts! Why on earth did I do an
apprenticeship for three years?

Doch nicht, um wieder was Neues zu lernen! Bescheuert!

Dann haben die mir
wieder erzählt, dass es keine Stellen gäbe und ich nur eine kleine Unterstützung erhalte.
Mutti und Vati sind fast durchgedreht.

Then they told
me again that there are no jobs and that I will only get a low unemployment benefit. Mom and
Dad almost freaked out/flipped out/went nuts/had a cow.
