Rash
An abnormality of normal skin, either color or contour. A single small abnormal spot is called a "lesion"
Urticaria
Raised areas, red and white, sometimes map-like. Also called hives. Caused by release of histamine from the Mast cells in the skin. Allergic in nature.
Lesion
A patch of the skin that does not resemble the area surrounding it. (i.e. acne, boils, blisters, etc.)
Laceration
A wound/cut in the skin.
Pruritis
Itchy skin. lesions may be pruritis (e.g. poison oak)
Erythema
Reddness
Symmetrical
equal present on the body from side to side
Macule
A small flat colored lesion under 1 cm in size with no change in texture compared to surrounding skin
Papule
A small (< 1 cm) lesion, solid and raised above the adjacent skin and without fluid
Pustule
small fluid filled raised lesions on the skin, with either fluid or pus (e.g. chicken pox)
Confluent
Rash (usually red) where individual lesions have merged together to form large patches of redness
Abscess
A swollen, usually tender area often red and warm. They are often "fluctuent" = feel like they are filled with fluid.
Hyperkeratotic
Increased skin productions making the lesions flakey and white to gray (e.g. psoriasis)
Target Lesion
A roughly circular lesion with red edges and central blanching
Maculopapular rash
A rash containing both macules and papules
