1 Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν; ἐπιμένωμεν [a] τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ, ἵνα ἡ χάρις πλεονάσῃ;
What then will we say? Shall we continue [a] in sin, in order that grace might abound?
2 μὴ γένοιτο· οἵτινες [a] ἀπεθάνομεν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ [b], πῶς ἔτι ζήσομεν [c] ἐν αὐτῇ;
By no means; we who [a] have died to sin [b], how will we live [c] in it still?
3 ἢ ἀγνοεῖτε ὅτι ὅσοι [a] ἐβαπτίσθημεν εἰς Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν [b] εἰς τὸν θάνατον αὐτοῦ ἐβαπτίσθημεν;
or are you ignorant that all [a] we who were baptised into Christ Jesus [b] were baptised into his death?
So then we were buried together with [a] him through baptism into death [b], in order that just as Christ was raised from [the] [c] dead through the glory of the Father, so also we might walk in newness of life.
For if we have been identified [a] with the likeness of his death, we shall certainly also [b] [be identified with the likeness] [c] of his resurrection;
knowing this, that our old man was crucified [with him], in order that the body of sin might be made ineffective, we are no longer to be enslaved to sin [c];
for the one who has died has been declared free [a] from sin.
If we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live together [a] with him;
knowing that Christ was raised from [the] dead, [so] he dies no longer, [and] death no longer masters him.
for the death [a] he died, he died to sin once and for all; the life he lives, he lives to God.
So you also reckon [a/b] yourselves on the one hand [to be] [c] dead to sin, but on the other hand living to God in Christ Jesus.
Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body by [a] obeying its desires [b],
nor continue to yield [a] your members [b] to sin as tools [c] of unrighteousness, but yield yourselves to God as alive from [the] dead and your members to God as tools of righteousness;
for your sin will not master you, for you are not under law but under grace.
What then? Shall we sin [a] because we are not under law but under grace? By no means.
16 [a] οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι ᾧ [b] παριστάνετε ἑαυτοὺς δούλους εἰς ὑπακοήν, δοῦλοί ἐστε ᾧ ὑπακούετε, ἤτοι ἁμαρτίας εἰς [c] θάνατον ἢ ὑπακοῆς εἰς δικαιοσύνην;
[a] Do you not know that to whatever [b] you yield yourselves as slaves to obey, you are slaves to that which you obey, whether sin which leads to [c] death or obedience which leads to righteousness?
But thanks be to God because [while] you were slaves to sin, [a] you obeyed from the heart the pattern [b] of teaching to which you were given over,
and [a] having been freed from sin you were enslaved to righteousness;
I am speaking humanly because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you yielded your enslaved members to uncleanness and lawlessness unto lawlessness, so now yield your enslaved members to righteousness unto holiness.
For when you were slaves of sin, you were ‘free’ with respect to righteousness.
Consequently what fruit were you having then? [a] Things of which you are now ashamed, for the end of these things is death.
But now, having been freed [a] from sin and having been enslaved [a] to God, you have your [b] fruit unto holiness, and the end is eternal life.
For the pay-back [a] of sin is death, but the free-gift [b] of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
