Poor lived in apartments buildings called "Islands" that covered and entire block. 44,000 apartments houses in rome at one time.upper apartments were cheaper,dangeous, and crowded. many people that couldn't a ford apartments lived on the crime infested streets

Christianity made followers pacifists-> oppose or war. couldn't defend Rome from barbarian attacts. Money that could of been used to defend Rome it was used for mantained churches/ monasteries.

Farmers on small farms couldn't use slaves like the larger farms. larger farms sold for cheaper. Smaller farmers lost their farms- flooded cities- emporor had to import grain to feed 100,000 unemployed in Rome alone

Roman soliders pulled from the border to fight in the civial war in Italy. Germanic hnters and hunters and herders invaded tribal cheifs ruled West and let roads and bridges go un prepaired feilds untiled, pirates and bandits made travel unsafe, cities declined and trade started to dissapear.
