What is worship?

To worship is to 'honour' or 'worth' someone and respect their value. It says that they are greater than you.

What can worshipping God involve?

offering direct praise or doing what God wants from us out of obedience and love

A personal time with God in which an individual can focus on their own needs. It can be spontaneous and follows no structure.

An attempt to focus one's thoughts on God. It gets rid of distractions and helps a person to think deeply. It can offer time away from a person's struggles. Words aren't required, so it flows smoothly.

Why do people use statues?

It is a 3D figure of a saint that helps the individual to concentrate in their prayers. They can be asked to intercede or bring inspiration.


It can help the believer to persevere if they are presented with a model of faith

What are icons?

Holy pictures of Christ, Mary or one of the saints

Why do people use icons?

In the orthodox church, it is seen as filled with the spirit of the saint being represented.


Some people believe that when you pray before an icon you come into direct contact with that person

Why are rosaries used?

Each decade can be used to reflect on the mysteries of faith and events in Jesus's life. The repetitive prayer helps focus the mind and avoid distractions.


Counting beads helps with meditation and a set format is comforting.

What is public worship?

Where Christians worship together to show that they are the Body of Christ and need each other.

What do christians believe about public worship?

That the support they get from other christians helps them to maintain a strong prayer life. Its a reminder that nobody is ever really alone.

YES. The catholic church stresses the importance of public worship and insists that Catholics attend Mass each Sunday and receive communion at least once a year.

What is liturgical worship?

It follows a fixed pattern or structure.

Why do some people like liturgical worship?

Because its familiar and stays the same so is easy to follow whatever church you go to. It gives a sense of tradition and there is lots of symbolism that can be understood

What is Non-structured worship?

Its usually a mixture of hymns, prayers and readings which don't follow a set order. It tends to be bible based and there are less ritual than structured services.

What churched have Non-structured worship?

Quakers, United Reformed, and Baptists.

What is spontaneous worship?

Its very informal and often includes people being inspired to shout or sing in the spur of the moment. It can be private or public.

What is charismatic worship?

It happens in meetings where people allow the Holy Spirit to work through them by speaking tongues or offering prophecy.

Who uses charismatic worship?

Pentecostalist churches engage in charismatic worship.
