Why do Christians have churches? |
It is important that they have a place where they can come together and worship as a community because it is a community religion, not a private faith. |

What do churches and chapels enable? |
Their design and exterior have features that reflect values of specific denominations |

What is a house of the people? |
A building with little importance, functional, and with little decoration. |

What is a house of God? |
A place where God is especially present. Often highly decorated and ornate and the interior and exterior should reflect Gods glory, because only the best is good enough for God. |

What are typical fetures in an orthodox church? |
Royal Doors, Pantokrator, Cupolas, Iconostasis, Royal Throne. |

What are Cupolas? |
Onion shaped domes on the outside of the church which represent the heavens above |

What is the Iconostasis? |
A screen covered in icons, which separates the nave from the sanctuary. It represents the division between heaven and earth. |

What is the Royal Throne? |
The altar which is also known as the holy table. Only the priests and deacon would see this. |

Doors in the iconostasis through which the priest can enter the sanctuary. |

What is the Pantokrator? |
The creator of the universe which is represented by a picture on the heavily decorated domed ceiling |

What are the features in an Anglican church? |
The focus is on the altar but since they don't believe in transubstantiation there is no tabernacle or sanctuary lamp. Few churches have statues or stations of the cross |

What do non-conformist churches focus on? |
The proclamation of the word of God through scripture (the pulpit) |

A portable altar table, seating will be flexible, no statues or stained glass or other decorations. There may be an organ and space for a choir. |

Very plain, with no towers or steeples. |

What is a pilgrimage? |
A physical and spiritual journey to a place of religious importance. It involves taking part in prayer and acts of worship |

Examples include Rome, the Holy Land or Lourdes. Large numbers of pilgrims come here, they usually last for more than 4 days and are focused on religious activities. |

Examples include Lourdes, Assisi, Knock and Fatima. Visits usually last about 2-3 days |

Examples include Lindisfarne, Mount Grace and Walsingham. They attract mainly local parishoners and visits usually last a few hours. |

It is where Jesus gave many of his teachings and called the fishermen to become his disciples. |

-It contains Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed on his last night -There is The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built over Golgotha where Jesus was crucified -The Via Dolorosa is the route Jesus took carrying his cross. People can reflect on his sufferings |
