Tiberius Gracchus (133)

Son of Cornelia, suffered early political setback as Quaestor in 137 due to treat he negotiated the surrender of a surrounded Roman army preventing it from being massacred by the Numantians. Sought radical land reform changes such as to restore countryside of smallholder vs industrial sized estates. Leads to military recruitment lessens danger of a slave revolt

Gaius Gracchus (131)

Created secret ballot for legislative proposals in 131, was even more ambitious then the last Gracchus. Stood for the tribunate of 124-3. He sought a broader support base and to avenge his slain brother. Created the Gaius program, led to his death in 121 BC

Jugurtha

Adopted nephew of Micipsa of Numidia, inherited Numidia in 118 with Micipsa's two sons Adherbal and Hiempsal. Jugurtha killed Adherbal and drove out Hiempsal. Hiempsal appealed to Rome but Jugurtha used bribes and connections to avoid punishment

Jugurthine war

Jugurtha, emboldened attacked Adgerbal (Hiempsal?) Rome sent a highly distinguished senatorial envoy who were ignored. Adherbal (Hiempsal?) capitulated and was killed. Rome summoned him after because it was getting embarrassing. Initially the intention was to prosecute senators but he bribed his way out and assassinates a rival prince.

Marius

Then they sent Q Caecilius Metellus who did much better but the war dragged. His ambitious legate, G. Marius a novus homo from Arpinum (same town as Cicero), went to Rome and stood for the consulship criticizing his commander

Victory over Jugurtha

107 Marius obtains the consulship, gains supreme command of the war against Jugurtha. He wins the already half-won war by getting a nearby African King named Bocchus to hand over Jugurtha. Marius' quaesor L. Cornelius Sulla who had carried out much of the negotiation of Mariu's behalf took Jugurtha and credit for winning the war

The Social War

Livius Drusus attempted a grand bargain in 91 including citizenship for the allies; it failed, and he was killed


after the failure of the law a revolt rose up throughout Italy. In the end their demands were met.
