Neuron

Individual nerve cell that is specialised to receive, process or transmit info (to other neurons, muscles and glands)

Dendrites

Detects and receives info from other neurons

(dendritic spines (branches) can grow = linked to brain plasticity)

Axon

Extension that transmits neural info to other neurons (or muscles and glands)

Myelin

White, fatty substance that surrounds and insulates the axon (myelin sheath)

Why is the myelin sheath important for neural transmission?

-insulates and protects axon (prevents interference)

-allows for neural messages to be sent faster

Axon terminals

Contains terminal buttons which have sacs (vesicle sacs) that store and secrete neurotransmitters that are produced by the neuron to carry messages to other cells

What are the three components that make up the synapse?

1. Dendrites of the post-synaptic neuron

2. Synaptic gap

3. Axon terminals of the pre-synaptic neuron
