Paragraph 1 - Introduction

1. State problem you hope to resolve


2. Explain type of positive change you would like to see


3. Mention how your opponents may want to solve the same problem.

Paragraph 2 - Summary of Opposing View

1. Topic sentence - Explain most important reason people disagree w/your point of view


2. Sentence using quote or paraphase from source that disagrees w/your point of view


3. Sentence of commentary to help reader understand your point of view


4. Optional - another sentence of commentary followed by another quote or paraphrase

Paragraph 3 - Statements of Understanding and Validity

1. Topic sentence - use concept word from final sentence of previous paragraph in a different way...use transition word at beginning of this paragraph


2. Sentence to explain how opposing arguments might be valid


3. 2-3 sentence commentary to show how opposition has some valid points


4. Sentence to indicate that under certain circumstances you might be able to share the opposing sides point of view

Paragraph 4 - Statement of Your Position

1. Topic sentence to state your point of view


2. Sentence with quote or paraprase that supports your point of view


3. 1-2 sentence commentary


4. Another sentence with quote or paraprase that supports your point of view


5. 2 sentences of commentary


6. Concluding sentence


* Repeat pattern for 1-2 paragraphs - 1 paragraph for each reason/supporting point of your agrument

Paragraph 5 - Statement of Context

1. Topic sentence to explain how your point of view is valid and has merit


2. Few sentences to describe situations in which your point of view has merit - also show that you understand people won't agree w/you all the time

Paragraph 6 - Statement of Benefits / Conclusion

1. Show opponent how they would benefit from accepting your position


2. End on a hopeful note
