Petrologists - are scientists who study rocks and their mineral compositions.

IGNEOUS

From the Latin word "ignis" means fire.

IGNEOUS ROCKS

produced deep underground by the cooling and hardening of magma.

MAGMA

molten rock that is produced in the upper part of the mantle.

LAVA

when magma reaches the surface

DIKES

vertical cracks or fissures is filled with magma.

SILLS

similar to dikes.


The magma wedges itself horizontally between sedimentary rock layers over a wide area.

LACCOLITHS

from magma that intruded between layers of sedimentary rocks causing them to arch upward.

BATHOLITHS

parent source of many other intrusive and extrusive masses extend deep into the earth.

SEDIMENTARY ROCKS

formed from broken pieces of rocks or sediments that are usually formed in water.

METAMORPHIC ROCKS
