Deposition

depositing sediment into piles

Sedimentation

building up of layers of sediment

Compaction

sediments are pressed together; lower layers of sediment are really compacted because of the weight of the higher layers

Cementation

water is squeezed out of the layers of sediment; crystals of salt "glue" sediment together
