9a.What drives a perversion ?

Freud's Theory of Disvowal

Whilst Freud's theory of sexuality is more or less dominated the field for the last century his use of terms and definitions are ambiguous.

What are Abberations ?

One of stores primary contributions to the study of perversions was the introduction of specific terms to describe sexual behaviour.

Abberations: sexual needs and preferences/practices not accepted by mainstream society. There are two types of aberrations; Variances and perversions

Variances

One of the two types of aberrations, defined as a sexual act considered to be outside of societal norms that is carried out WITHOUT the intent to harm others. these behaviours consist of any acts imaginable yet they are performed out of curiosity/ fleeting interest and not considered essential to achieve sexual satisfaction and does not centre on revenge.

Perversions

A habitual, preferred abberiation necessary for ones full satisfaction, primarily motivated by hostility. This act implies two things:

1. the sexual act is carefully selected and repeated by an individual to achieve sexual satisfaction.

2. Driven by hostility which implies further understanding of the patients sexual history is needed to understand where the hostility is stemming from and how it can be eased.

Based on the definition of Perversions what happens between a couple when having sex ?

Although the couple are engaged in the same sexual act one will be indulging in their perversion .

How is a individual with perversion diagnosed?

A diagnosis is unable to made without a holistic understanding of experiences and needs underlying the persons personality as a whole. (Kraft-ebbing 1886; Stoller,1986)

Hostility: Gender wound

Revenge stems from some historical, traumatic injury inflicted in the individuals developing sense of gender ( their sense of themselves as masculine/ feminine)
