Characteristics of RIP

- Distance vector protocol

- Administrative distance of 120

- Uses hop count as metric

Advantages

- Non-complex; easy to configure

- Good for small networks without redundant paths

- Oldest protocol, good for interoperability

Disadvantages

- Max hop count of 15

- Prone to looping because of slow convergence

RIP v.1

- Only supports classful routing

- Only deployed in private networks

RIP v.2

- Supports classless routing

- Auto-summarisation on by default

- Multicasts, doesn't broadcast

- Simple password authentication

RIP advertisements

- "Updates" (flushes) of routing tables every 30 seconds

- RIP may be configured to not advertise routes unnecessarily.

RIP timers

- Update -> 30 seconds (Convergence of neighbouring routers)

- Invalid -> 180 seconds (TTL = 16)

- Flush -> 240 seconds (removed)
