System builds rhythm by adding together units of time
Triplet
a triplet shortens the duration of a note value slightly, and allows you to divide a whole into three equal parts. By joining the three notes together with a curved line (called a slur) and adding a 3 above or below, we can indicate that those three notes should be played during the time that one or two notes are usually sounded.

a momentary contradiction of the prevailing meter or pulse
