Rhetorical Criticism

A qualitative research method, designed for the systematic investigation and explanation of symbolic acts and artifacts. For the purpose of understanding rhetorical processes.

Symbols

Something that stands for or represents something else by virtue of relationship or association. Symbols are used for communicating and explaining thoughts or feelings with others or oneself.

How does rhetoric use symbols?

Rhetoric often involves the deliberate and conscious choice of symbols to communicate with others (even though the meaning received is often different than what the creator of the message intended).

Signs

Are not conscious choices one can make. They are warning, advisory, informative in nature.




Ex. smoke means fire, leaves changing color means Autumn is coming
