Something that stands for or represents something else by virtue of relationship or association. Symbols are used for communicating and explaining thoughts or feelings with others or oneself. |

How does rhetoric use symbols? |
Rhetoric often involves the deliberate and conscious choice of symbols to communicate with others (even though the meaning received is often different than what the creator of the message intended). |

Signs |
Are not conscious choices one can make. They are warning, advisory, informative in nature. Ex. smoke means fire, leaves changing color means Autumn is coming |
