African Americans

Some sided with Britain after being promised freedom. As the need for soldiers rose, some states began enlisting African-Americans, 5000+. Southern colonies feared weapons in the hand of slaves.

Valley Forge

George Washington set up camp at Valley Forge. Winter of 1777, terrible winter, lacked clothes, shelter. Greatest challenge was keeping the army together. Many men left. Conditions improved by Spring and morale was boosted when they found out about France's support.

Battle of Saratoga

British forces never made it to Saratoga to support. Destroyed Britain's plan to separate New England colonies from Middle Colonies. British troops were surrounded and outnumbered. Britain forced to surrender and 5,700 troops gave up their weapons. Turning point in the war.

French Influence

Ben Franklin stations in Paris trying to get Frances support. Gave money to America but not full support. Announced support after the Battle of Saratoga. Realized America could win the war. February, 1778: Declared war and sent full support.

Spanish Influence

Hated the British. Declared war in 1779. Louisiana Governor forced troops out of Baton Rouge, Alabama, and Florida.

American Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages were fighting at home, Patriotism: More at stake, Guerilla warfare, and George Washington.


Disadvantages were Lacked a regular army/navy, little military experience, weapons in short supply, militia fought for short periods of time, not all supported war, and money.

The British won the battle but suffered heavy losses, more than 1000 died and wounded. Second major battle.

Led by Captain John Parker. The British have continued their march to concord. First battle of the war.

Leading member of the Son's of Liberty. He rode to Lexington, a town east of concord to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that the British were coming.
