Hypothesis

An educated guess based on our knowledge already.

Aim

The purpose of the experiment

(often begins with he word 'To')

Observation Experiment

Observe.

Watching something happen or observing an object or thing ( e.g.. cell)

'To observe'

True Experiment

Investigate.

Investigating what the results/effect is.

Doing the experiment.

'To investigate'

Demonstration Experiment

Demonstrate.

Demonstrating how something works.

'To demostrate'

Independent Variable

The thing we change on purpose.

(only 1 independent variable)

(change as many times as time permits, the more the better.)

(at least 5 times)

Dependent Variable

The thing that changes because of the independent variable has changed or the thing you will measure (e.g. time or temperature).

Controlled Variables

The thing/s we keep the same,

Uncontrolled Variables

Thing/s that we cannot control. (e.g wind).

However still try and control it. ( e.g. do experiment inside if possible).

Hypothesis for true experiment

As something happens to the independent variable something happens to the dependent variable.

Materials

- list

- in columns and rows.

- once you have done five rows stop and continue on beside it.

- not dot points

- tell the reader how much of and the size of the equipment used. ( if it is appropriate).

(e.g. 250mL of water)

Method

- written in a step like manner (e.g. 1 ________, 2 ____ etc.)

- written in past tense, third person and passive voice. ( e.g. present- place water in beaker. past- placed water in beaker)

- third person- no reference to a person. (e.g. she, I he, they....etc.)

- passive voice- the water was placed in the beaker.

subject: water

verb: placed

Tables

- independent variable on the left-hand side

- dependent variable on the right.

- until go in the top of a column in brackets, not in each box

Kinetic Theory

Kinetic- movement

Definition of Matter: Matter is anything that occupies a volume and has space.

Kinetic Theory- states that matter is made up of tiny particles that are in constant, random, motion.

Solid

Made up of tightly packed together particles which vibrate but cannot move freely.

Liquid

Made up of particles which can move freely but not completely freely.

Gas

Made up of less particles and the particles in a gas move very fast. They move freely.

Melting

A process whereby a solid changes into a liquid.

Adding more heat gives the particles more energy which causes them to break away from the attraction of all the particles around them and become a liquid.

Attraction

A force mutually drawing the particles closer together.

Solids- Attraction

Strong Attraction

Liquids- Attraction

Weak attraction

Gas- Attraction

No attraction

Melting Point

It is the temperature at which a solid changes into a liquid.

e.g. melting point of ice.water ( scientific name for ice) is 0 degrees celsius, however for dry ice

( Sodium Chloride (salt)) it is 36 degrees Celsius)
