Plot

Events in a story

Ex: Harry Potter and the half blood prince: Harry gets back to Hogwarts, he learns about the half blood prince, Harry nearly gets Dumbledore killed, Snape kills Dumbledore and reveals himself as the prince, they have a funeral for Dumbledore.

Climax

The most exciting of suspenseful part of a story

Ex: Hunger Games: When they actually start the Hunger Games and almost everyone gets killed.

Suspense

A way to create excitement in a story

Harry Potter: We want to know if Harry somehow killed Dumbledore with the potion.

Character/ dynamic and static

A character is a creature that takes part in a story. Dynamic: a character changes. Static: Character doesn't change.

Ex: Hamilton: Eliza Schuyler is a dynamic character starting off in the musical as a helpless, lovesick girl, becoming a young wife, and finally she becomes a strong woman with goals to keep her husband's legacy.


Ex: Harry Potter: Harry Potter just stays at the hero character type and throughout the series he constantly makes stupid deductions, often resulting in death.

Conflict/ internal and external

Sort of like a fight actually. An external conflict happens outside of a character while an internal one usually has to do with a decision a character has to make.

Internal conflict: Hamilton: Angelica Schuyler is also in love with Hamilton but she has to let go because she wants her sister Eliza to be happy with him.


External: Hunger Games: Everybody is being brutally slaughtered by everyone else.

Setting

When and where a story takes place.

Ex: Harry Potter: Takes place in the 90s and mostly in Hogwarts castle.

Resolution

The end of a story. Mostly a happy ending but sometimes it's not.

Ex: good ending: Hunger Games: Katniss and Peet's survive both Games and fall in love.


Ex: bad ending: Divergent: Tris dies, leaving Four alone

Rising Action

The part in a story building suspense

Ex: Warrior Cats: The Dark Forest warriors are about to go and try to kill everyone else in the other clans

Exposition

The introduction of characters, setting, and conflict among other things
