parallel
two lines going in the same direction that are equal distant apart and not touching
hypotenuse
the longest side of a right angle triangle, opposite the right angle
triangle - right angled
one angle is 90 degrees and the other two are complementary angles.
(for examples: Angles: 90, 70, 20)
angles - supplementary
the sum of two angles add up to 180 degrees and together they make a straight angle (don't have to be adjacent)
angles - complementary
the sum of two angles add up to 90 degrees (don't have to be adjacent)
congruent
when one shape can become another using turns, flips and/or slides, then the two shapes are congruent
rotation
to turn around a center:
The distance from the center to any point on the shape stays the same.
Every point makes a circle around the center.
translation
move in the same direction and the same distance
reflection (x axis)
mirror line on the x-axis, change the (x,y) to (x,-y)
commutative property
you can swap numbers over and still get the same answer when you add, or when you multiply.
2 + 3 = 3 + 2
associative property
it doesn't matter how you group the numbers (i.e. which you calculate first) when you add, or when you multiply.
a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c
distributive property
for all real numbers, a, b, and c
a(b + c) = ab + ac
transversal
a line that cuts across parallel lines
GCF
greatest common factor
the largest number that factors evenly into two or more larger numbers
polynomial
An expression that is a number, a variable, or the product of a number and one or more variables
pythagorean theorem
state formula
dilation
a transformation that increases or decreases the size of a figure
