What is mechanics?

The study of the motion of objects

What is kinematics?

The science of describing the motion of objects using words, diagrams, numbers, graphs, and equations

What is a scalar?

The quantities that are fully described by a magnitude (or numerical value). -distance

What is vector?

The quantities that are fully described by both a magnitude and a direction. -displacement

What is speed?

The quantity of a scalar, the rate at which an object covers a distance.

What is velocity?

The quantity of a vector, the rate at which an object changes its position.

What is acceleration?

A vector quantity, the rate at which an object changes its velocity. -depends if object is speeding up or slowing down or if moving + or - direction

What is spring force?

Force exerted by a compressed or stretched spring upon any object that is attached to it

What is tension force?

Force transmitted through a string, rope, cable, or wire.

What is buoyancy?

friction in a liquid that allows an object to float

What is static friction?

results when the surface of 2 objects are resting on one another

Skydiver accelerates from 20 m/s to 40 m/s in 2 seconds. What is the skydiver's average acceleration?

A= Vf-Vi/t

A= 40 m/s - 20 m/s /2s = 20 m/s /2s

A= 10 m/s2

Go kart accelerates from 4 m/s to 22 m/s in 3 seconds. What is the Go kart's average acceleration?
A= Vf-Vi/t

A= 22 m/s - 4 m/s /2s = 18 m/s /3s

A= 6 m/s2

Lisa traveled a total distance of 440 miles. Her trip took 8 hours. What was her average speed?

V= d/t

V= 440 mi/ 8hr

V= 55 mi/hr

Matt traveled a total distance of 100 miles to the city. It took him 5 hours to get there. What was the average speed?

V= d/t

V= 100 mi/ 5hr

V= 20 mi/hr

What is the force net of 2kg and 5 m/s?

F net= m/a

F net= 2kg/ 5m/s

F net= 10N

What is the force net of 7kg and 10 m/s?

F net= m/a

F net= 7kg/ 10m/s

F net= 70N

What causes doubling of the net force?

doubling of the acceleration and halving of the net force results in a halving of the acceleration

What causes doubling of the mass?

halving of the acceleration and halving the mass results in a doubling of acceleration
