What is revelation through scripture

Eg bible or qu ran - they are give the title of holy to show their stays with god they are considered revelatory as they reveal something about god

Scripture is significant because of the _________ of the bible

Devine authority

How does wiles describe the authority of the bible

Hard authority is status and soft is a statement about somethinf - the bible has hard authority that is akin to the law

Hard and soft authority

What are the criticisms of devine revelation

1. Laws sometimes require clarification to meet new issues so although the bible is Authorititive is is time bound and hard to adapt to different situations eg the old testements laws couldn't work in today's society eg sunday is sabbath day but some professions require work on sunday

What is an non propositional revelation and how does it relate to the bible

God doesn't directly reveal truths about himself but the receiver can recognise god acting in history/human expiriences eg nature - receiver intrepts it how they want so it is indirect

Reader is more active as it's a subjective interpretation

Enables people to apply scripture to modern issues

THE BIBLE IS STILL DEVINLY INSPIRED BUT THE WRITER IS NOT DEVINLY DICTATED

What are the criticisms of non propositional revelation

1. Statements revealed can't be taken as error less

2. Each statement will mean something different to each person so s debates can never be settled eg paley said that you can have a re while looking at nature but Dawkins said that while he was moved by nature, he didn't have a re

What is a propositional revelation

Where scripture is devinely inspired so statements made about god can be taken as fact eg 10 commandments come from god so shouldn't be questioned

Why is faith an important feature of propositional revelations Inc Aquinas

Showing faith is to accept the revelations

Aquinas said that faith concerns knowledge about god who is transendant so revelations have to be propositional as god is beyond human comprehension

Faith although cannot be proven true like science but it is factual unlike opinion so propositional truths can't be demonstrated through reason alone must have faith

What are the criticisms of propositional revelations

1. Suggests the receiver is passive - but people think they are active so what ever truths are revealed may be misunderstood and not accurately recalled making what is revealed meaningless

2. What about conflicting truths in religions

3. Other revelations may be more direct and personal eg visions

Why is revelation through scripture better than other expiriences

Scripture is universally accepted
