External respiration

Exchange of air from outside with capillaries of the air sacs

Internal(cellular) respiration

Gas exchange at the level of the cells within all organs of the body

Nose

Has nares

Nasal cavity

Mucus lined, cilia filters foreign bodies

Paranasal sinuses

Hollow air containing spaces in skull, help lighten the skull and produce sound

Pharynx

First portion of the pharynx, contains the pharyngeal tonsils aka adenoids which are collections of lymphatic tissue. The oropharynx contains the palatine tonsils, two rounded masses of lymphatic tissue. The laryngopharynx serves as a common passage for food and air. It the divides into the esophagus and larynx(voice box)

Epiglottis

Flap of cartilage attached to the root of the tongue prevents choking or aspiration of food. Aspiration can cause lung irritation and breathing can stop. When eating, larynx gets covered by the epiglottis

Trachea- windpipe

Tube 4 1/2 inches long and 1 inch in diameter, kept open by 16-20 c shaped rings of cartilage separated by fibrous connective tissue that stiffens the front and sides of the tube

Trachea to the lungs

Trachea branches to the bronchial tubes aka bronchi which are delicate epithelium surrounded by cartilage rings and a muscular wall

Bronchioles

Branches of the bronchi. Terminal bronchi narrow into alveolar ducts which end in collections of air sacs called alveoli. Alveoli have thin one cell thick layers of endothelium that allows for gas exchange

Pleura

Parietal pleura is the outer layer. Visceral is inner closer to lungs. A serious fluid moistens the pleura and facilitates movement of the lungs within the chest

Right lung v left lung

Right is Larger, 3 lobes. Left two. Apex is the top, base is lower area. Hilum of the lung is midline region in which blood vessels nerves lymphatic tissue and bronchial tubes enter and exit

Diaphragm

Contracts and descends with inspiration/inhalation, decreasing internal air pressure so air flows into the lungs to equalize the pressure. Reverse happens for exhalation/expiration
