What is the causative agent of Bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis (transit fever)?
Mannheimia haemolytica
Where is Mannheimia haemolytica normally found?
It is a commensal in the nasopharynx of ruminants.
What is the causative agent of Pasteurellosis in lambs?
Mannheimia haemolytica
Describe the lab characteristics of Mannheimia haemolytica.
Weakly B-haemolytic
Grows weakly on MacConkey
Oxidase positive
What important pathogenicity factor does M. haemolytica possess?
Leukotoxin
What pathology might one see in a cow with M. haemolytica infection?
Fibrinous to necrotising bronchopneumonia; clots and adhesions on the pleural surface of the lungs (characteristic!); infections may also be associated with meningitis or polyarthritis.
What time of year are lambs most at risk for enzootic pneumonia caused by M. haemolytica?
late spring or early summer
Describe the pathology associated with enzootic pneumonia (M. haemolytica) in lambs.
Fibrinous, ventral lung lobe, bronchopneumonia; septicaemia leads to pleurisy, pericarditis, meningitis, and liver and pharyngeal lesions.
Describe what one might see on a histopath section taken from a lung infected with M. haemolytica.
Plugging of the small airways with cellular debris and exudation.
What lambs are susceptible to Pasteurella trehalosii?
Older lambs being transferred from a poor quality diet to a rich quality diet.
How would you control M. haemolytica infection?
Whole killed bacterial vaccine
Where is Histophilus somni normally found and what does it cause in young calves?
H. somni is a commensal of the URT and genital tract.

In young calves it may cause peracute death due to thromboembolic meningoencephalitis, pneumonia, and myocarditis.
Describe bovine TB.
Bovine TB is caused by Mycobacterium bovis. It causes chronic granulomatous pneumonia and wasting in cows and is ultimately fatal.
How is TB controlled in UK cows?
Test and slaughter
What two methods are available for the diagnosis of TB in cows?
1. Comparative intradermal PPD test

2. Gamma interferon blood test. Involves the lymphocytes from the blood sample to be cultured and stimulated with PPD. If the cow is positive the Lymphs will secrete interferon gamma.

Both tests show false positive and false negatives
Describe the lung pathology seen in calf enzootic pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma bovis.
Mycoplasma causes a bronchointerstitial pneumonia with cranioventral distribution. Large lymphoid follicles develop around infected airways, impeding the exchange of gases and leading to catarrhal bronchitis.
What disease does Mycoplasma mycoides cause and why is it important?
Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia.

It is important because it is exotic to the UK and USA. Therefore it is NOTIFIABLE.
