How is surfactant removed?
Exocytosis into alveolar macrophages and type II epithelia cells. Then recycled.
Describe the composition of surfactant/surfactant layer
90% lipid, mostly phospholipid. May be mono or multilayer.
Describe SP-A
Surfactant protein A. Large glycoprotein, controls secretion/reabsorption of surfactant, prevention of infection
Describe SP-B
Surfactant protein B. Small, hydrophobic protein that can be incorperated into the phospholipid layer for stabalization
Describe SP-C
Surfactant protein C. Larger protein spans a lipid bilayer. Creates a resivoir from which surfactant can re-form.
Describe SP-D
Surfactant protein D. Like A (large, control of secretion/absorption, immunity)
Describe IRDS
Infant Respiratory Distress Syndrome. Caused by deficiency of surfactant -> atelectasis -> increased work of breathing. Tx'd w/ glucocorticoids.
Describe the effects of surfactant on pulmonary filtration
Prevents transudation
What are problems w/ the bubble model?
1) liquid is continuous b/t alveoli, so theoretically the tensions of adjacent alveoli cannot be different 2) When alveoli are compressed, they can form 'dry rafts' of surfactant 3) Alveoli are not spheres
