Define Reliability
ability to measure the same thing over time
Random error
Fluctuation in measurement
Validity
Whether a measure is actually measuring what you have defined it to measure
Assessing Reliability:
Test-retest reliability
Alternate from reliability
Split half reliability
Test-retest reliability - A method in which the same measure is given to the same people at two different times

Alternate from reliability- A method in which the items in a measure are presented affect the ways in which people respond

Split half reliability- means of evaluating internal consistency of a scale that compares one randomly selected half of a scale from the other randomly selected half of the same scale
Assessing Reliability:
Item-total reliability
Inter-coder reliability
Item total - Means of evaluating internal consistency of a scale that compares the total score for a scale with individual item scores for the same scale

Inter-coder - Indicator of how similar coders are coding content, both in terms of indentifying units of analysis and in the contextual labels they ascribe to those units.
Assessing Validity:
Face validity
Criterion-related validity
Face Validity - measures or procedures are looked at and questioned if they make sense at face value

Criterion-related validity - deals with how a particular measure holds up when compared to some outside criterion
Construct Validity
Extent to which your variables are logically related to other varibles
Issues of Credibility:
Member Checks
Obtaining feedback on your research findings from representatives of the population under study.
Issues of Credibility:
Data Triangulation
Conducting more than one form of data collection to enhance the validity and credibility of your results
Issues of Credibility:
Thick Description
Allows the reader to validate the findings from themself
Issues of Credibility: Peer Review
Provides support by playing "devils advocate" challenges the researchers assumptions
