produced by anterior pituitary at day 25 in response to decreasing progesterone

- luteotrophic and supports CL to keep PG levels high

When would a false pregnancy occur in the bitch?

prolactin

treatment for FP

do not treat mild and transient signs - self limiting

if severe/aggressive signs

- cabergoline (Galastop) is given orally for few days

What drug is given to FP?

cabergoline (galastop)

--> inhibits prolactin by acting on anterior pituitary dopamine R

(prolactin falls --> PG declines --> luteal phase ends --> anoesturs and normal behaviour)

when should bitches prone to FP be spayed>

around 3 months post season

if spayed in FP PG levels fall which stimulates prolactin to increase PG levels

describe a queens FP

mate and ovulate/spontaneous ovulation -->progesterone levels high in luteal phase (for about 6 weeks) --> no behavioural signs but can get mammary hyperplasia

What medicine is used to terminate bitch pregnancies? how does it work?

aglepristone (progesterone antagonist)

- block PG receptors on uterus, blood levels normal

- up to 45 days

- oestrus returns in less than 6m

What drug can suppress or terminate oestrus?

delvosterone tradname

proligestone
