ADH (vasopressin)

1. Released by posterior pituitary gland (osmoreceptors)

2. Stretch receptors in LA sensitive to BV changed and capable of releasing ADH

3. Promotes reabsorption of H2O

4. Released in response to increase osmolarity

5. Targets collecting ducts of kidneys

Posterior pituitary

1. Neurohypophysis

2. Releases vasopressin, oxytocin

Anterior pituitary

1. Adenohypophysis

2. Secretes prolactin, growth hormone, luteinizing hormone, FSH, TSH, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)

Aldosterone

1. Produced in zona glomerulosa of adrenal cortex

2. Acts on distal tubule and collecting duct

3. Increases Na reabsorption -> decreases Na excretion

4. Increases K secretion -> increases K excretion

Determinants of Na excretion

1. GFR (increased GFR, increases Na excretion)

2. Aldosterone (Presence of aldosterone, decreases Na excretion)

3. Atrial natriuretic peptide (increased ANP, increases Na excretion)
