Andreas Vesalius
•Studied surgery in Italy
•1543- Wrote "Fabric of the Human Body"
•Vesalius respected Galens work but proved he was sometimes wrong i.e;
- Human jaw is made of one bone not two
- The breastbone has three parts, not seven
- Blood does not flow into the heart through indivisible holes in the septum
• Showed that doctors could learn more from human dissection
William Harvey
•Studied medicine at Cambridge
•1628- Published book "An Anatomical " Account of the Motion of the Heart and Blood" which described how blood circulates the body
•Became doctor to King Charles I
•Harvey proved that the heart acts as a pump
•Proved this by dissecting live cold-blooded animals such as lizards to see the movement of the heart
• Dissecting human bodies to understand the heart more
• Proved that the body has a one way system for blood- tried to pump liquid past the valves in the veins but could not do so
•Calculating that the amount of blood going into the arteries each hour was three times the weight of a man showing the same blood is being pumped about
* I M P O R T A N T- The discoveries Harvey made would not have been possible without the invention of the microscope by Anthony Van Leeuwenhoek
Ambroise Paré
•Learnes surgery as an apprentice
•1536-1556-- Paré was an army surgeon, then a surgeon to the Kings of France.
•Famous in Europe for his book," Ten bBooks on Surgery"
• Paré changed the treatment of Gunshot wounds. Replaced the use of boiling oil, instead using his own mixture of egg yolks, oil of roses ad turpentine
•Used ligatures to stop bleeding- Silk threads tied around individual blood vessels
•Designed and arranged the making of fake limbs for soldiers. Included drawings in his book to spread the idea
Physicians
• University trained physicians still accepted Hippocrates theory of 4 humours
• Training concentrated on the writings of Greek Doctors, especially Galen and Ibm Sina.• Read the work of Vesalius, Paré, and Harvey but were reluctant to except idea that Galen could be wrong
• Harvey's discovery not excepted immediately
• Advised clients to eat healthy and exercise
* Common means of diagnosis- "Uroscopy", examining the appearance of urine
Women Healers & Wisewomen
•People couldn't afford physicians, looked instead to the women of the family or local wise women skilled in herbal remedies
• Lady Grace Milnay- Read Turner's book "A New Herbal" as well as Galen and Ibn Sina's work. Kept record of patients and treatments used.
• Women worked as midwives, although the first handbooks were written by men who had no practical experience.
• Women healers fell out of fashion to men. Women not allowed to go to Uni, so they could not match the theoretical knowledge.
•Invention of the obstetrical forceps used to free a baby from the womb w/out harming mother or baby. After this male physicians said that only men should use the forceps because they had been to Uni to gain the anatomical knowledge.
Paracelsus
• Believed that the words of Galen were false.
• Burned Ibn Sina and Galen's boos in a public bonfire
• Paracelsus said that Hippocrates and Galen were wrong about nearly everything
• Said that the theory of 4 humours was wrong. Said that illness in the body was caused by chemicals and should therefore be treated by chemicals
• Most physicians thought he was a bit of a ******** tbh
Bleeding
•Started by Hippocrates to balance the humours of the body (black bile, yellow bile, blood, & phlegm)
•Still used to this day
•Was the go to treatment for literally anything and everything. Like an ice pack and some aspirins from the school nurse.
