(1478-1535) English Humanist, martyred as the result of Henry VIII marriage crisis. Didn’t believe Henry’s new religion as a way to remarry. Was tried and convicted and was killed.
Indulgences
a way for the church to get more money from the people. Was advertised as a way to buy your way out of purgatory faster-pay for your sins and be forgiven.
Defeat of Venice (why?):
overextension/involved in mainland politics. Had desire to be a “great power” in early 1500’s, resulted in the league of Cambrai (everyone against Venice 1508), by 1530 Venice loses.
Art in Renaissance
Showed the change from the dark ages to the new era of light through art. Show of wealth. artisans were commissioned privately as well as for ecclesiastical purposes. Showed change in importance from necessity to luxury. Also, could see intellectual movements through (importance of classics)
Nunnery
an escape from marriage for women. They remained elite institutions because they were populated by elite widows. Havens for widows and runaways. Dowry was still required if you were to choose it over marriage.
Influence of Discovery of New World
new resources binging brought in from the new world, drew attention away from European resources (mines in Germany). This caused stress economically for parts of Europe.
Inquisition
catholic attempt to stamp out Protestantism while revitalizing the church itself. Roman inq. (1542)
Humanism
chief intellectual movement of the renaissance driven by intellectuals concerned with the scholarly disciplines of grammar, poetry and moral philosophy. Way of thinking and using knowledge to improve safety. Focused debates on usage and made everything relative. Man is the measure of all things.
