What are the abuses of the catholic church?
Simony: Buying or selling inportant church positions
Nepotism: Appointing of one’s own relations as cardinals or bishops, whether they were suitable or not.
Pluralism: Holding more than one church position at the same time.
Absenteeism: A priest of bishop neglecting and living away from his own parish or diocese.
What are the Causes of the Reformation?
Abuses in the Catholic Church: Ignorant Priests, Weathy Bishops (because of tithes [1/10 of income]), Unworhy popes (Pope Alexander VI had mistresses and had several children)
Sale of Indulgences: Church granted indulgences to reduce/eliminate your time at Purgatory (place where your sole is cleansed of sin). It was possible to gain indulgences by donating to church funds. It gave the idea that rich people could buy their way into heaven.
The Renaissance: Questioning of old beliefs (think for themselves) People could not help comparing the wealth of the church to the poverty of its founder, Jesus
Printing: Helped the spread of new ideas
Wealth of the Papacy
