What is the difference between REM and Non REM in regards to sleep disturbance?
if disturbed from Non rem you will go back into a ligher stage of non rem.
if disturbed from REm you will go back into non-REm
What is the difference between non-REm and REm depth in dogs and cats and humans?
in Humans NONREm is often deeper. In cats and dogs REM is often deeper.
What is the difference between REm and NON-REm in regards to the hippocampus (memory consolidation)?
In nonREm there is irregular hippo activity, but in REM the activity is the hippo is regular, but of low frequency. this might be why we find it hard to remember dreams unless woken out of one.
What is the difference between REm and NON-REm in regards to the nervous system?
Non REm is ruled by the parasympathetic nervous system
REM is ruled by the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight). this might be why we experience middle of the night anxiety.(a carryover effect from the adrenalin etc from a dream)
Is the hippocampus under aroused during REM?
yes, that might be why we can't remember dreams.
What is the scanning hypothesis?
the belief that the flickering eye movements in REm are the scanning movements of watching your dream. Not enough research -difficult to research this.
What is the difference between REm and NON-REm in regards to blood flow to the brain?
In nonREm blood flow to the brain drops by 10%.
In REM blood flow to the brain increases to more than quiet wakefulness (particularly to the cerebral cortex)
What is the difference between REm and NON-REm in regards to behavioural inhibition?
In Non rem there is still a little movement. ie in stage 2 sleepwalking takes place although its instigated in stage 3/4
In REm there is complete paralysis of the muscles apart from the fingers, toes and eyes. REm motor inhibition resides in the brain stem.
What is the difference between REm and NON-REm in regards to phasic pupil dilations?
In REm there is phasic pupil dilations as it is a time of sympathetic nervous system dominance.
In NOn-rem there are no phasic pupil dilations.
What is the difference between REm and NON-REm in regards to mentation?
REM - bizarr colorful dreams, emotional content. When woken from REM sometimes these can be recalled.
NonREm - mentation is mundane and fragmented and only extends back 5-15secs. it might be that non-REm mentation is a result of being woken up.
is there a qualitative difference between the mentation in non-REm and REm?
yes.
Why is it difficult to describe a dream?
because its often a visual and spatial experience. Hard to describe in words. Seems to involve more of the right cerebral hemisphere of brain which is more involved with space, 3d orientation and emotional reactivity.
