Transplant surgery
Surgically replacing an organ from a donar that is functional
Blood transfusion
A process that involves taking blood from one person (a healthy donor) and giving it to someone else.
Why do some people agree with organ transplants?
The death of someone can give life to someone else.
Why do some people disagree with organ transplants?
It is sometimes difficult to define death, for example, would it be ok to take organs from a brain dead patient?

Transplant surgery is very expensive and take resources away from other equally needy medical cases.
Why don't Jehovah's witnesses have blood transfusions?
The belief is taken from the book of acts that says 'abstain from blood' (no blood.)

They see blood as 'sacred' and something that shouldn't be tampered with... "Jesus shed his blood for mankind's sin"
What religion is against blood transfusion?
Jehovah's Witnesses
Jehovah witnesses view on organ donation
They would not disagree with organ donation, however would disagree to a blood transfusion as blood is sacred to them and would go against their teachings "abstain from blood"
Arguments for genetic engineering
>removes unwanted genetic diseases such as hunting terms and ALS Motor Neurone
Disease
>Better quality of life
>One of our basic human rights is to choose
Argument against genetic engineering
>Designer babies - choose hair and eye colour, intelligence, physical appearance, sexuality.
>Destruction of unwanted embryos - created more than needed, must be destroyed 14 days after conception by law
>catholic view on destruction of unwanted embryos "life begins at conception"
Christian views on genetic engineering
>Scientists try to mimic God's actions and pose is the 'creator'

>genetic engineering goes against gods wish to respect nature

>we don't yet know the effects of genetic engineering
What is cloning
Cloning is the scientific method by which animals or plants can be created which have exactly the same genetic make up as the original, because the original DNA is used.
Therapeutic cloning
This is something known as stem cell cloning. The aim is to clone biological material to produce embryos from which stem cells can be taken and used in research for a range of diseases.

Religious beliefs FOR cloning
>It helps with embryonic research, which could help sick or infertile people.

>it is compassionate and helps people's quality of life

>people have a right to choose, free will is God given
Religious beliefs AGAINST cloning
>It is against nature, and against the way we are created by God

>it results in the disposal of many leftover embryos, which may be seen as individual humans

>encourages scientists to make further advances which are more unacceptable

> a cloned person may not have a soul
