Homelessness

The number of homeless people is increasing. This includes the hidden homeless people who sleep rough, squatters, people who sleep on other peoples floor, people in hostels and so on. Homelessness is incraesing because house prices are increasing rapidly, and council houses have been sold off.

Gambling

As people become more affluent in Britain more people have become involved in gambling. Some are serious gamblers and the others may just have a flutter on the odd occasion. However at the other end of the scale there a re many people who are poor and use gambling a way of earning money. There is the buzz to carry on. In the long term it get them in a worse financial situation, bu the chance of winning big amounts of money keeps them gambling. You can gamble on anything that has no guaranteed outcome.

Religious attitudes to gambling

Buddhism:


-Craving (tanha) associated with gambling and wealth will not bring true happiness.


-Wealth should be earned honestly (right livelihood).


-We need wealth to meet our needs but no more in case we become attached to it.


Christianity:


-Gambling denies the biblical work ethic of honest labour with deserved reward.


-A greedy is an idolator who cannot obtain salvation


-The love of money is the root of all evil (NT)


-Some accept fundraising by raffles and some agree the lottery is fine in moderation.

Where do people get their wealth

Business and enterprise - people who run a good business, because of a good education.


Gifts and inheritance - wealthy of the virtue of the family r through inheritance (money left in a will on the death of someone).


Earnings and savings - A person may have a good job where they are well paid, they save theri money.


Dishonest Means - Wealth is gained at the expense of the suffering of another.

Buddhist attitudes to the poor and to the use of money

Buddhist believe that there is nothing wrong with wealth but the issue is how it is used:


-Riches ruin the foolish...through craving for riches, the foolish one ruins himself (Dhamapada)


-Acquiring wealth is acceptable if at the same time, it promotes the well being of the community or society.


-Unskillful thoughts founded in greed is what keeps us circling in samsara. In an endless round of repetitive, habitual attachment (Kulandanda)


Buddhism encourages right action, right thought, right intentiona nd right livelihood. Therefore, to see povery and ignore would be wrong. Buddhists have a duty to help the poor.


-Dana (Charity or generosity) is part of the basis of merit that the Buddha taught.


-Karuna (compassion) is wishing others to be free from suffering.


-"In our world today everyone is looking for personal happiness. So I always if you wish to be happy and aim for self interest then care for others. This brings lasting happiness. This is real self interest, enlightened self interest" (Dalai Lama)

Christian attitudes to the poor and to the use of money

Christians believe there is nothing wrong with wealth itself, it is how we use it. It can be used for Good and bad. If we have wealth idt is a gift from God. Our money should come from lawful means. In the bible there is a warning saying that the wrong attitude to money could lead people away from God.


-People who want to get rich fall into a temptation and into foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and ruin destruction. The love of money is the root of all evil (NT)


-No one can serve two masters.. you cannot serve both money and God.


-Be on your guard against all kinds of greed: a mans life life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions (NT).


Christian believe that whatever the reason for a person being poor, we have a duty to use our wealth to help them. It is not right to judge but help.


-go sell everything you have and give it to the poor you will have treasure in Heaven (New testament)


-If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need how can he love God? (NT)


-What good is it if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds.. If a brother has no clothes or food what good is to wish him well without caring for his physical needs. (NT)

Charities to help the poor

Shelter - founded in 1966 because the owner realized that the rich were getting richer but the poor were spiraling. Shelter has fundraising initiatives. Such as football shirt day for £1 (strip for shelter)


Salvation Army -


-Rebuilding lives - offering a hand up to homeless people, a family tracing service, rehab.


-Comfort and support - food packages


-belonging - Kids and youth clubs


They run a Christmas Present Appeal each year for children, for those who dont have much at chrismas. Runs carehomes for older peop,l, employement services for the long term unemployed, support services to the armed forces. Putting Christian beliefs into action to help but not to judge anyone who is in need.

Is the least amount of money an employer can legally pay a worker per hour. It is set by the goverment.


It protects workers at the lowest ed of the pay structure form employers trying to exploit the employees as slave labour.


It protects British workers from foreign workrers who may be willing to work for less.


Thirdly, it protects employers from workerschallenging their pay.


Religious peple belive in fairness and the idea of a fair days work for a fair days pay.

Excessive salaries

Salaries that are high according to the Job being done. People argue that nurses should be paid higher because theyre job is more valuable. But others can say that footbalers or business men are at the top of their proffesion and they worked extremely hard to get there, they have a special talent

Religious people and their views on the lottery

Greed, selfishenss, wasting money, materialism versus spirtualism, people winning at others expense. However, giving money for good causes helping families, giving poeople oppurtunities, giving money to places of worship.
