Sacrificing everything for its sake

Hedonism

Embracing pleasure

Pleasure is the only thing that is good for a person

Concupiscence

-Tendency of human nature to actual sin as a result of original sin done by Adam, which had darkened our intellects and weakened our will

-It's the movement of our sensual appetite toward what we imagine is pleasant and away form what we imagine is painful

-is dangerous when sensual pleasure is desired (desires must always follow reason that leads us to virtue and to our end aka god)

-is an image of God's love for us

-only true friendship leads 1 to god

Learning to love x3

2) takes knowing the good through the the study of ethics and morality

3) takes practice in choosing the good so that we might form good habits or virtues

4 kinds of love

2) storge (natural affection) = natural appreciation and kindness for people around us, family love

3) Philia (friendship)= born from storge and common interests, goals or thoughts, a kind of love that is shared between 1 or more specific people

4) Eros (attraction, sexual love) born from storge and Philia, includes sexual its within a marital commitment with only 1 person (sexual its alone is not Eros love)

3 ways to view love

1) scientific = it's merely a chemical process in the brain, it's all based on our biology

2) human = natural appreciation and kindness for people around us (storge) so what draws us together is our basic need to be in Union with each other

3) supernatural = the ability to have Christ like love (agape) we love those who we are attracted to and are in a relationship with but we also love all those placed before us. This kind of love relies on God's grace

Chastity

-is the use of sexuality according to God's plan, which brings together the body and the spirit

-it is closely related to the virtue of temperance (self control)

2 elements needed for proper expression of sexuality

1) Unitive = a man and woman United in marriage

2) procreation = open to children

The church's message about Chastity

Sex cannot be separated from procreation, love and marriage. Sexual intimacy and sexual relations are only appropriate between a man and woman United in marriage. Consent between the 2 is not enough. Faith and reason should govern and guide desire and passion

Challenges to marriage

- abuse

- infidelity

- Selfishness

- divorce

- alcoholism

An annulment is not a Catholic divorce

The Catholic churches looks at marriages as valid, binding spouses together for ever. When couples do separate/ divorce the church will examine their marriage in detail to determine if there was an essential element missing in their relationship therefore making it so that the spouses did not have the kind of martial link that binds them together for life

Ground for a declaration of nullity

-insufficiency or inadequacy of judgement ( young age, pressure to marry quick, insufficient court ship)

-psychological incapacity

-absence of a proper intention to have children, be faithful, or remain together until death

-misrepresentation (failing to reveal homosexuality, bigamy)

Status of children in the case of an annulment

A declaration of nullity does not make the children legal, and it doesn't change the parents responsibility towards their kids
