What is Venial Sin?

A sin that weakens a person’s relationship with God. E.g. a little lie, swearing. To show sorrow for venial sins people can receive communion, express genuine sorrow through prayer.

What is Reconciliation/ Penance/Confession?

A sacrament where Catholics are cleansed of mortal sin. It heals the relationship with God, the Church and the community. It is a sacrament of Healing. Can be performed by a priest or bishop. It is made up of four steps: - Contrition, Confession, Satisfaction (includes penance and the Prayer of Sorrow) and Absolution.

What is Contrition?

Sorrow for your sins, with the firm resolve not to commit them again.

What is Confession?

Owning up honestly about sins committed, accepting responsibility for them.

What is Satisfaction?

Doing whatever is possible to repair harm or offence caused by sins.

What is Absolution?

Forgiveness by Jesus through the priest.

What is a Sacramental Seal?

The absolute secrecy that a priest is bound to not tell anyone what is said during the sacrament of Penance. There are no exceptions.

What are Parables?

Stories that were told by Jesus that were used to teach important lessons. Examples include The Prodigal Son and The Lost Sheep.

What is Anointing of the Sick?

A sacrament where Catholics who are seriously ill or physically frail receive God’s blessing. Gifts include strength, peace, comforting, courage and forgiveness of sins. It has two main parts: the priest laying his hands and the anointing of oil with the words: through this holy anointing, may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up. It can only be performed by a priest or bishop and a Catholic may receive it multiple times. It is a Sacrament of Healing.

What are "The Last Rights"?

Three sacraments which together prepare a person to pass from this world to God. These are: Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick and the Eucharist (Holy Communion).

What is a Viaticum?

The Eucharist received at the Last Rites. Latin for provisions for the journey. This emphasizes Jesus as the companion of the person who is dying.

What is a Soul?

Immortal spirit in each living human person. It does not die. It goes to heaven when a person dies.

What is Heaven?

Happiness that is beyond human imagination.

What is Purgatory?

The final purification before people experience heaven.
