1. The Shahadah
- Witnessing to the unity of God and Muhammad as God's messenger
2. Salat (Ritual Prayer)
- 5x daily prayer
- purification w/ washing before salat
3. Zakat (Almsgiving)
- Fixed "tax" on wealth to be distributed to the pool - God's service to the poor

- Special time for reflection

Hajj: (pilgrimage to Mecca)
- last month of the year
- Significance: encounter w/ the sacred (circling the Ka'aba) & re-creating foundational events of Muhammad & Abraham

Running ceremony, drinking from zamzam spring, stoning pillars, sacrifice of animals
What are some rituals in Judaism and Christianity that function similar to those rituals of Islam?
Judaism- Passover
- celebrates the Hebrew escaping of enslavement in Egypt
- 10th plague, all 1st born killed-except for the Jews b/c put blood from cattle on their doors
- They were "passed-over"
- Bread could not rise- do not each unleavened bread

Christianity: Eucharist
- sacrament of ordinance
- commemoration of the last supper- Jesus' last meal w/ his disciples before his arrest and crucifixion
- Eucharist symbolizes his body--Wine= blood, Host= body
What is "purification" before prayer? What is one purified from? Why is this important?
-Purification (through washing) is needed before salat
- Impurities are not sinful- but not appropriate for worship of God
- Effect: constant mindfulness and awareness
