Power
God-given capacity of everyone to affect their own life, the lives of others, and the world around them either positively or negatively
Power-over Model
When power is seen as something that some people-the powerful- have and others-the powerless- don't
Power- with Model
a model of power that is sensitive to the needs of the whole community. This model doesn't entrust power to a single person or group
The Encyclical "On Social Concern"
Pope John Paul II recognizes that the responsibility for this situation lies with those who abuse power
Temptations
invovle power but not the kind of power Jesus will use in his ministry. These are temptations to accept power-over
The three temptations are
Power over nature

Power over all the kingdoms

Power over God
Power over nature (temptation)
Jesus was fasting and hungry so the devil says to turn the stone into a loaf of bread if he is really the Son of God. He resists because it's only to prove his identity - later he heals the sick which is power over nature out of compassion for those who suffer
Power over all the Kingdoms (temptations)
the devil claims authority over all the world's kingdoms- if Jesus worships the devil, power over all the kingdoms will be given to him- Jesus rejects power over and reminds the devil he only worships God
Power over God (temptations)
Devil takes Jesus to the top of the Temple and tempts him to take power over God: " If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down and the angels will protect you."- Jesus rejects
The healings of Christ
Healings performed by Jesus show the way Jesus used power - woman in crowd suffering from hemmorages for 12 years touches Jesus and gets cured. Jesus says " your faith has made you well; go in peace."
Empowerment
When a persons power grows rather than diminishes because of their contact with someone
Christian Base Community
people who celebrate mass and share their faith
Poverty
a state in which the ability of individuals or groups to use power to bring about good for themselves, their families and their community is weakened or blocked- pervents us from acting as images of God, or as fully human
Indigenous

Circle of Concern
1st step in determining where our power will be the most influential. It includes all matters in life that concern us in a general way- health, friends, family , work, school, environment, world hunger, etc.
CIrcle of Influence
within the circle of concern. Things we can influence make up this circle- ideal starting point for tapping into power
Nonviolent Resistance
to fight against something without using physical force
Boycott
organized, large-scaled refusal to buy certain products
Assertiveness
to tactfully but confidently speak up for oneself
