Rehabilitation Act of 1973: Section 503
• Prohibits discrimination in employment on the basis of physical or mental handicaps and requires affirmative action on the part of all federal contract recipients and their subcontractors who receive annual contract exceeding $10,000.
• Firms subject to this provision are required to make reasonable modifications in work settings and work facilities to increase accessibility.
• Some of the more common violations of Section 503 included:
a) inaccessible personnel office and/or worksite
b) applicant requirements that are clearly unrelated to job
c) failure to use appropriate recruitment sources for informing individuals with disabilities of the job
