The center of England. An important location for the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Provincial

When something is sort of country and rural. Having or showing the manners, viewpoints etc. considered characteristic of unsophisticated inhabitants of a province. It has negative connotations.

Metropolitan

Urban, sophisticated, accepting and combining a wide variety of people, ideas, etc.

North-South divide

Refers to the economic and cultural differences between Southern England and the rest of Great Britain. But there is also internal North-South divides in Wales (North and South Wales) and Scotland (where Edinburgh is viewed as 'fancy and citified' and 'English' while Glasgow is industrial).

OECD:

Stands for 'Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development'. It is an international economic organization, founded to stimulate economic progress and world trade.
