Refractory |
Refers to the amount of heat it takes to return clay to it's rock like form and/or slump or melt it |
"resistance to heat" |
|
Vitrification |
The tightening of or reduction of space between particles resulting in a lack of materials ability to absorb water. |
To return to a glass or rock like form through heat or some other chemical process |
|
Plasticity |
The property of clay that allows it to change shape without rupturing when force is applied to it. |
Subjective in measurement, cannot be scientifically proven |
|
Workability |
The character of a clay that is a combination of plasticity and wet strength |
The addition of grog or sand may permit a plastic clay to stand up taller without slumping, this making it more workable |
|
Short |
Clays and clay bodies lacking plasticity. |
A clay bent or coiled that cracks may be short |
|
Grog |
A clay additive made from fired clay that has been ground down into a powder |
Can add texture and strength, prevents warming and cracking. Jagged particles. |
|
Silica sand |
An lay additive that does all the same things as grog but is actually small, round particles of sand rather than jagged particles of fired clay. |
|
|
Impurities |
Other substances that affect the quality PR characteristics of clay |
Bugs, iron oxide, titanium, etc. |
|
Slip |
A watered down form of clay used to join two pieces together so that they stay in suspension |
"Flocculant"; a chemically induced treatment to clay that helps keep a decorative slip or glaze from settling out. |
|
Terra Sigillata |
A form of decorative slip. The finest particles of clay are separated out from the rest of the slip |
Use mainly on low fire or earthenware. The results is a smooth surface of a pot almost like a glaze |
|
Pyrometric Cone |
A triangular piece of clay designed to melt at a specific temperature. The most accurate way to measure the temperature in a kiln. |
|
|
The Four Components of a clay Formula/Recipe |
Clay-Kaolin Flux- Fieldspars Fillers-sand, grog, nylon fibers, paper pulp, chards of metal, organic materials, pasta, rice, colorants or stains |
