What is reflexology? |
Practice of manipulating reflex areas in the feet and hands. Reflex areas correspond to specific body parts and organs. |
Dr. William Fitzgerald |
Used the theory of energy pathways as a basis for a method called "zone therapy." |
Who is Eunice Ingham? |
She is the mother of reflexology |
What was Eunice Ingham able to do? |
She was able to systematically map out the zones of the feet in relation to the organs and areas of the body. Also found out that alternating pressure did more than just reduce pain. It had a healing effect on illness. |
How is the body viewed in reflexology? |
Viewed in 10 segments or zones that run vertically the whole length of the body. There is one zone for each finger and toe. |
Blockage and congestion can do what to the energy? |
It will restrict the energy flow and may affect anything within that zone. |
What are referral areas? |
Specific areas which correspond to each other. |
Examples of referral areas |
Hip=shoulder Upper arm=thigh Knee=elbow Forearm=calf Ankle=wrist Hand=foot Small toes= fingers Thumb=big toe |
What are benefits of reflexology? |
Relaxation- of stress and tension Toxins- helps body rid itself of toxins Circulation- increases circulation of blood and lymph fluids Nerves- improves nerve supply Balance- ability of body to balance itself Energy- increases energy by revitalizing organs and glands Prevention- preventive health care Non-Invasive Efficiency- addresses all systems of the body Simplicity- simple, yet powerful techniques that anyone can learn and use. |
What Reflexologists DO NOT DO |
Diagnose, prescribe, and make claims about specific results |
What happens if one is sick? |
Don't overwork someone who is sick. Shorter, lighter, and more often. |
Guidelines |
1.Check for abnormalities- corns, calluses, ingrown toenails, cuts, bruise, broken bone and bunions 2.Fingernail length- should be short that they do not make contact w/ skin of the foot. 3. Instruments- foot rollers, balls, but only for personal use. 4. Lotions & oils- no oil, maybe a little of cornstarch or baby powder 5. Pressure- get feedback from client. 6. Length of treatment- 40-50 min. & may include hands 7. Frequency of treatment- responsibility of practitioner to decide appropriate interval between treatments. 8. Client Self-Help- educate client about the body and work reflex areas develops responsibility of their health. 9. Hygiene- Always wash hands before and after working on a pair of feet |
Side to Side |
Rapidly moving the hands back and forth in opposite motions to each other Used to increase circulation, ease tenderness, and relax or loosen the ankle & metatarsal bones |
Ankle Loosening |
Alternate straight back and forth allowing the ankle joint to serve as the pivot. |
Ankle Rotation |
Increase ROM as well as loosen ankle joint |
Spinal Twist |
One hand should remain stationary while the other wrongs or twists Great tension reliever |
Metatarsal Kneading |
Sometimes called lung press Gentle wave-like sensations created are soothing and pleasurable |
Toe Rotation |
Increase ROM and loosening joints of each toe Soothing |
Diaphragm Relaxer |
Relaxing the diaphragm, allowing for deeper breathing |
Diaphragm Deep Breathing Release |
Excellent way to end the session |
Thumb Walking |
Used to cover large areas of the foot Thumb, unbends allow it to scooter or creep forward about one sixteenth of an inch. |
Finger Walking |
Top and sides of the foot; either side of finger can be used When using index finger- perform finger walking- thumb provides leverage |
Hooking in and backing up |
Deep pinpoint reflexes Press firmly on small area of thumb/finger |
Rotating on a Point |
Uterus/prostate (Up)- inside the foot Ovary/teste (out)- outside the foot Press lightly on the pinpoint area-make tiny circles |
