Fiction
Stories that are NOT true. They are fake, made up, and didn't really happen.
Nonfiction
Written work that is factual and true.
Story elements
Different parts of a fiction book that help you understand the story.
Setting
Where AND when a story happened.
Characters
The people, animals, or things (like robots) that are part of a story.
Plot/Problem
The main problem that a character in a story is trying to solve. A book can have one problem or many problems.
End/Resolution
How the character solves the problem in the story.
Graphic Organizer
A picture or diagram used to help you understand what you've read. Can use them with fiction OR nonfiction.
Heading
Bold words at the top of the page that tell you what information you will learn about on those pages.
Glossary
Found in the back of nonfiction books. It tells you the meaning of important new words.
Table of Contents
It lists the chapters of a book.
Fact
Something you can prove. A fact can change, but it can still be proven. For example, "Today is Friday." That is a fact, but it will change when the day is over.
Opinion
Something that someone believes. For example, "I think that we should all eat broccoli everyday" is an opinion.
Main idea
The most important, or BIG idea, from a story, poem, or nonfiction text.
Supporting detail
A detail that gives more information about the main idea of something you've read.
Context Clues
Using information you have read to help you figure out what a word means.
Chunking
A reading strategy used to break long words into smaller parts you know.
