Howell-Jolly bodies

  • Associated: Pernicious, hemolytic, rushed erythropoiesis, post splenectomy,
  • Seen in Wright's stain and supravital stains
  • Special stain: fuelgen

Heinz bodies

Denatured Hgb, unstable Hgb, G6PD deficiency


Associated Disorders:


  • G6PD def or other enzymes of the hexosemonophosphate shunt
  • Ingestion of oxidation drugs: hemolytic anemia
  • fava bean cause hemolysis in G6PD def
  • No seen in wright stain
  • bite cell in wright stain
  • Visible by supravital stain

Basophilic stippling

Precipitation of ribosomes DNA


Associated with:


  • Thalassemia
  • Lead poisoning
  • Megaloblatic anemia
  • Abnormla heme synthesis
  • See with wright stain and supravital stains

Pappenheimer bodies

Iron, sideroblastic granules


Single or clusters


Associated with:


  • Impaired Hgb Synthesis
  • hemolytic anemia
  • hemoglobinpathies
  • post splenectomy
  • seen in wright stain
  • Called Siderotic granule in prussian blue stain

Nucleated RBC

Nucleus present


  • Immature RBC
  • Associated with hemolytic anemia
  • Normal infants
  • rushed erythoropoeisis

Cabot rings

spindle material in abnormal mitosis


remnant of nuclear material


seen in nucleated and non nucleated cells


Associated with:


  • Severe anemia
  • Following splenectomy
  • lead poisoning
