Patients with advanced stages of esophageal cancer or those that are poor candidates for surgery can be offered stenting as a palliative treatment for dysphagia. Stenting can also be used for palliation of patients with postoperative tumor recurrence. Both plastic and metal stents can be used for palliation of obstructing esophageal adenocarcinoma, although complications are more frequent with plastic stents.
