Stress

Internal resistance or reaction of an elastic body to external forces applied to it

Tensile stress

Axial stress that develops at the cross section of an elastic body to resist the collinear tensile forces tending to elongate it.

Tensile strength

The resistance of a material to longitudinal stress

Compressive stress

Axial stress that develops at the cross section of an elastic body to resist the collinear compressive forces tending to shorten it.

Compressive strain

Shortening of unit length of material produced by compressive strength

Tensile strain

Elongation of a unit length of material produced by tensile stress

Shear

Lateral deformation produced in a body by an external force

Prestress

Introduce internal stresses to a concrete member in order to counteract the stresses that will result from an applied load

Pretension

Tendons are first stretched between two abutments until a predetermined tensile force is developed

Continuous footing

A reinforced concrete footing extended to support a row of columns

Long column

Occur when the unsupported height is more than ten times the shortest lateral dimension of the cross section

Composite column

A structural steel column thoroughly encased in concrete reinforced with vertical and spiral reinforcement

Toggle bolts

Used to fasten materials to plaster, gypsum board and other thin wall materials; having 2 hinged wings

Carriage bolt

Threaded bolts having a circular head, an oval or flat bearing surface, and a means of preventing rotation of the bolt

Header

Short transverse joist that support the end of the cut-off joist at a stairwell hole

Bull-nosed

A step, usually lowest in a flight, having one or both end rounded to a semicircle and projecting beyond the face of the stair string

Horizontal supply main

Pipe from the street water main or other source of water supply

Foot valve

Used mainly to prevent loss of priming of the pumps

Key cock

Operates with a round tapering plug ground to fit a metal sheet

Maximum demand

Refers to the maximum water discharge for plumbing fixtures in terms of units

50/75 mm dia. PVC

Vent pipe in a residential bldg

MDP

Directly connected with the Meralco kilo-watt-hour meter

Bargeboard

Decorative board that follows the roofline

Muntin

Stile within the frame of a door

Mullion

Slender vertical member dividing the opening for a pair of double doors

Expansion shield

Lead or plastic sleeve inserted into predrilled hole and expanded by driving a bolt or screw

Expansion bolt

An anchor bolt having a split casing that expands mechanically

Shear plate

Timber connector, round plate of malleable iron inserted into a corresponding groove, flush with the face of a timber

Bolt

Metal bar or rod in the mechanism of a lock

Latch

Device for holding a door closed

Latchbolt

Lock bolt having a beveled head

Explosive rivet

Rivet for joint accessible from one side only

Pneumatic riveter

Pneumatic hammer used with a rivet set to form the second head

Dolly

Tool for receiving and holding the head of a rivet while the other is being headed

Rim joist

A joist set on top of the sill and forming the perimeter of a wood framed door

Header

A framing member crossing and supporting the end of joists

Tailpiece

Relatively short beam, joist, or rafter supported by a wall at one end

Sleeper

Wooden strips laid upon a concrete slab to provide a means of attaching a subfloor or flooring

Girt

Horizontal timber connecting the posts of a braced frame at an intermediate level above the ground flr
