Rosh Hashanah

Dates: 1st & 2nd days of Tishrei

Occasion: Jewish New Year
Extra: Souls are judged; fate decided "temporarily"; beginning of 10 Days of Repentment; wear white clothes; eat apples, honey, pomegranates; blow shofar; Tashlich ceremony (throw bread crumbs into running water)

Yom Kippur

Dates: 10th day of Tishrei

Occasion: Jewish Day of Atonement
Extra: fate is sealed; fasting & no pleasures, luxuries; white clothes; read Book of Jonah; prayers begin with Kol Nidre (forgives Jews from promises); blow shofar; end of 10 Days of Repentment

Sukkot

Dates: 15th of Tishrei

Occasion: harvest, commemorates the sukkot/booths
Extra: Jews build sukkot & live/eat there for 7 days; palm, etrog, myrtle, willow are waved in 7 directions; each night invite a Biblical figure to booth

Hanukkah

Dates: 25th of Kislev + 8 days

Occasion: Maccabee victory over Greek army of Antiochus; recapture & purification of Temple
Extra: light Menorah (Hanukiah) each night & spin dreidel; presents not traditional

Purim

Dates: 14th of Adar

Occasion: victory of Jews against Haman
Book of Esther: story of Esther, Mordechai, Haman; took place in Shushan in kingdom of Ahasueras; festive carnival holiday & eat triangular pastries (hamentaschen); exchange gifts (Mishloach Manot)

Passover (Pesach)

Dates: 15th of Nissan + 7 days

Occasion: Exodus from Egypt; ancient Hebrew New Year before Rosh Hashanah
Extra: 1st two days have seder with hagaddah; must eat matzah (blech); Song of Songs recited; begins 7 week semi-mourning cycle (Omer)
