What are meninges? And name each

Membranes that line external to the organs of the central nervous system, they protect the cns

- dura mater

- arachnoid Mater

- Pia Mater

Dura mater

Limits excessive movement of brain within cranium

Pia Mater

Clings tightly to brain following its every movement(convolution)

Contains blood vessels

Which of the meninges contains blood vessels?

Pia Mater and arachnoid Mater

What are commissures?

Connect corresponding gray areas of the two hemispheres of the brain, which allows them to coordinate and function as a whole

Corpus callosum

Largest commissure

Anterior and posterior commisures

Least prominent

What is contained within the subarachnoid space

Filled with cerebrospinal fluid and has the largest blood vessel serving the brain

What is contained within the ventricles

Cerebral spinal fluid

What is the composition of cerebrospinal fluid and what is its function?

Watery broth similar to blood plasma but with less protein

liquid cushion reduces brain weight by 97% and prevent brain from crushing

Protects brain and spinal cord from trauma

Helps nourish brain

What is a ganglion

Group of neuronal cell bodies in the pns

What is the dorsal root ganglion

Groups of neuronal cell bodies in the posterior side of the spinal nerve

What type of neurons are found in the dorsal root ganglion? why?

Sensory neurons since the sensory fibers always come from the back of the spinal cord

What is a mixed nerve?

Nerves that contain both sensory and motor fibers (or afferent and efferent axons)

These nerves transmit impulses both to and from the central nervous system

Which of the cranial nerves are mixed?

All except optic and olfactory

Do cranial nerves have dorsal and ventral roots and why?

Yes they do because dorsal roots of the cranial nerves contain ganglia and motor fibers while the ventral root contains sensory fibers

What nerves have dorsal and ventral roots?

Both cranial and spinal nerves

Why is there a difference between dorsal and ventral roots?

They are different because each perform a different task pertaining to the type of neuron it carries

Dorsal roots

Allow Sensory neurons to enter the spinal cord

They go up towards the brain (cns) and into gray matter

Also contain dorsal root ganglion or spinal ganglion that have cell bodies

Ventral root

Allow motor neurons to exit spinal cord; carry info/ impulse away from CNS

Arachnoid mater

Form loose brain and spinal cord covering which contains csf and blood vessels that serve the brain

Ependymal

Cell that bears cilia which helps circulate csf in central cavities of cns

Microglial

Cell in cns that engulf invading microorganisms and dead neurons

"Garbage collectors"

Atrocytes

Cell in cns that feed neurons by extracing blood sugar from capillaries for energy

Neuron

Cells in pns and cns that conduct electrical impulse along the plasma membrane

Carry communicate info through nerve impulse (action potentials)

Back and forth impulses to and from pns and cns
