What are the functions of the urinary system? |
- The urinary system filters blood (filtration, reabsorption, secretion) - Regulates : 1) Blood volume 2) Concentration of blood and solutes: Na+, Cl-, K+, Ca2+, HPO4, 3) pH of extracellular fluid: secretes H+ 4) Blood cell synthesis of Vitamin D |
What are the organs of the Urinary system? |
- Kidneys
- Ureter - Urinary Bladder - Urethra |
What does the kidney do? |
It produces urine |
What does the ureter do? |
The ureter transports urine toward the urinary bladder |
What does urinary bladder do? |
Temporarily stores urine prior to urination |
What does urethra do? |
Conducts urine to exterior; in males, it also transports semen |
Where is the kidney located? |
It lies behind the peritoneum, on the posterior abdominal wall on either side of vertebral column. |
What is the renal (fibrous) capsule of the kidney? |
The renal capsule is a fibrous connective tissue. It surrounds each kidney. |
What is the perireneal (perinephric) fat or the kidney? |
It engulfs the renal capsule and acts as cushioning. |
What is the renal fascia of the kidney?
The renal fascia is a thin layer of loose connective tissue. It anchors the kidneys and surrounding adipose to abdominal wall
What is the hilum of the kidney? |
The hilum is the point of entry for the renal artery and renal nerves. The hilum is also the point of exit for the renal vein and ureter. |
What is the cortex of the kidney? |
The renal cortex is the superficial portion of the kidney, in contact with the fibrous capsule. |
What is the medulla of the kidney? |
The renal medulla consists of 6 to 8 distinct triangular striations called renal pyramids. The tip of each pyramid is a region known as renal papilla which project into the renal sinus. It surrounds the renal sinus. |
What are renal columns?
Bands of cortical tissue called renal columns extend into the medulla and separate adjacent renal pyramids. The columns have a distinctly granular texture, similar to that of the cortex. |
What is minor and major calyx? |
Urine is produced in the kidney lobes. Ducts within each renal papilla discharge urine into a cup-shaped drain called a minor calyx. Four or five minor calyces merge to form a major calyx, and two or three major calyces combine to form the renal pelvis. |
Where is the ureter? |
The ureter exists at the hilum. It connects to the urinary bladder. |
What are the parts of the nephron? |
- Bowman's capsule - Proximal tubule - Loop of Henle - Distal tubule |
Where is juxtamedullary nephrons? |
They have nephrons that extend deep into the medulla. |
Where is the cortical nephron? |
They have nephrons that do not extend deep into the medulla. Almost entirely in the cortex. |
Where is the renal corpuscle? |
It is in the cortex. |
