What is an organic substance? (With examples)
Organic substances contain carbon.
hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen.... |
What FIVE properties does water have which are caused by hydrogen bonds?
High Specific heat capacity.
High latent heat of vaporisation. High surface tension. Relatively high density. Excellent Solvent properties. |
Give a brief outline of monosaccharides.
-a carbohydrate whose molecules are a single sugar unit. (sweet, soluble)
-general formula= CnH2nOn -Monosaccharides that contain five carbon atoms are called pentoses=C6H10O5 i.e ribose and deoxyribose -Monosaccharides that contain six carbon atoms are called hexoses = C6H12O i.e glucose (alpha and beta) |
Give a brief outline of disaccharides.
-Monosaccharides can link together to form larger molecules.
-Two monosaccharides = disaccharides. (sweet, soluble) -Different pairs of monosaccharides can link together to make different disaccharides e.g two glucose molecules link together to form the disaccharide maltose. |
Give a brief outline of polysaccharides.
-Polysaccharides are carbohydrates whose molecules are polymers-made of many monosaccharide monomers linked together.
-large molecules, not sweet, not soluble. |
