Describe the USAF core competencies (SOB1.1)
Core competencies are not doctrine, but enablers of doctrine.

1) Developing Airmen- People are the ultimate source of combat capability, the value of strategy, technology, and organization is diminished without professional airmen. Includes Active Duty, Guard, Reserve, and civilian personnel.

2) Technology-to-warfighting- commitment to innovation to guide research and development, and field unsurpassed capabilities.

3) Integrating Operations- Bringing together the diverse capabilities found in all four Service branches remains pivotal to successful joint warfighting.
Define the USAF Air and Space Power Operational Function of Strategic Attack (SOB2.1)
Strategic Attack- Offensive action conducted by command authorities aimed at generating effects that most directly achieve our national security objectives by affecting the adversary's leadership, conflict-sustaining resources, and strategy. Must hold an adversaries instruments of power at risk- military, economic, and diplomatic, (information) - DIME. Strategic Attack is about defeating the enemy as a system.
Define the USAF Air and Space Power Operational Function of Counterair (SOB2.1)
Counterair- Operations to attain and maintain a desired degree of air superiority by the destruction, degradation, or disruption of enemy forces. Accomplished with offensive counterair (OCA), and defensive counterair (DCA).
OCA- Operations to destroy, degrade, or disrupt enemy air and missile power close to its source. OCA is the most effective and efficient method for achieving air superiority.
DCA- Detection, identification, interception, and destruction of attacking enemy air and missiles and normally takes place over or close to friendly territory.
Define the USAF Air and Space Power Operational Function of Counterspace (SOB2.1)
Counterspace- Kinetic and non-kinetic ops conducted to attain and maintain a desired degree of space superiority by destroying, degrading, or disrupting an enemies space capability. Made up of two parts, Offensive Counterspace (OCS) and Defensive Counterspace (DCS).

OCS are operations to deny, degrade, disrupt, destroy, or deceive an adversary's space capability. DCS prevent the enemy from doing the same.
Define the USAF Air and Space Power Operational Function of Counterland (SOB2.1)
Counterland- Air and space ops against enemy land force capabilities to create effects that achieve Joint Force Commander (JFC) objectives. Two methods are Air Interdiction (AI) and Close Air Support (CAS). AI is ops to divert, disrupt, delay, or destroy the enemy's surface military potential before it can be used effectively against friendly forces. CAS provides direct support to help friendly forces in contact with enemy forces.
Define the USAF Air and Space Power Operational Function of Countersea (SOB2.1)
Countersea- An extension of Air Force capabilities into a maritime (waterway) environment.
Define the USAF Air and Space Power Operational Function of Information Operations (SOB2.1)
Information Ops- Actions taken to influence, affect, or defend information, systems, and/or decision-making to create effects across the battlespace. Includes 3 types of operations: Influence, Electronic Warfare, Network Warfare.

Influence- Change the enemy's behavior achieved through counterpropaganda, psyops, military deception, ops security, counterintelliegence, and public affairs.
Electonic Warfare- Electromagnetic and directed energy to control the electromagnetic battlespace.
Network Warfare- digital battlespace in the information domain which is composed of hardware, software, data, and human components.
Define the USAF Air and Space Power Operational Function of Combat Support (SOB2.1)
Combat Support- Essential capabilities, functions, activities, and tasks necessary to create and sustain air and space forces. Includes Agile Combat Support (ACS) and Expeditionary Combat Support (ECS). ACS exploits speed and flexibility to concentrate, employ, and sustain US forces. ECS capabilities are associated with deployment, reception, bed down, employment, sustainment, and redeployment.
Define the USAF Air and Space Power Operational Function of Command and Control (C2) (SOB2.1)
C2- The exercise of authority and direction by a properly designated commander over assigned forces in accomplishment of the mission. Includes planning, executing, and monitoring actions. Centralized C2 of air and space forces under a single airman is a fundamental principle of air and space doctrine.
Define the USAF Air and Space Power Operational Function of Airlift (SOB2.1)
Airlift- Transportation of personnel and material through the air. Done with airland, airdrop, hub-and-spoke, and direct delivery.
Define the USAF Air and Space Power Operational Function of Air Refueling (SOB2.1)
Air Refueling- In-flight transfer of fuel between tanker and receiver aircraft. By increasing range, it is a force ENABLER. By increasing payload, it is a force MULTIPLIER.
Define the USAF Air and Space Power Operational Function of Spacelift (SOB2.1)
Spacelift- Delivers satellites, payloads, and material to space. Four basic services are to deploy, sustain, augment, and maintain.
Define the USAF Air and Space Power Operational Function of Special Operations (SOB2.1)
Special Ops- Use of special airpower ops to conduct unconventional warfare, direct action, special recon, counterrorism, foreign internal defense, psyops, and counterproliferation.
Define the USAF Air and Space Power Operational Function of Intelligence (SOB2.1)
Intelligence- The product resulting from the collection, processing, integration, analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of information concerning foreign countries or areas. Intel is the product of turning recon and surveillance into an accurate, predictive, and actionable format.
Define the USAF Air and Space Power Operational Function of Surveillance and Reconnaissance (SOB2.1)
Surveillance- SYSTEMATICALLY obsersing air, space, surface, or subsurface areas, places, persons, or things, by visual, aural, electronic, photographic, or other means as a CONTINUAL process.
Recon- obtaining specific information about the activities and resources of an enemy and generally has a time constraint associated with the tasking.
Define the USAF Air and Space Power Operational Function of Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) (SOB2.1)
Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR)- Specific task performed by rescue forces to recover isolated personnel during war or MOOTW (Military Ops Other Than War).
Define the USAF Air and Space Power Operational Function of Navigation and Positioning (SOB2.1)
Navigation and Positioning- Provide accurate loaction and time of reference in support of strategic, operational, and tactical ops.
Define the USAF Air and Space Power Operational Function of Weather Services (SOB2.1)
Weather Services- Supply timely and accurate environmental information including both space environment and atmospheric weather.
